Die hl. Verena, koptische Ikone.

St Verena, benefactress to the sick, is buried in Zurzach.

St Verena in Zurzach

St Verena also dates back to the Theban Legion. She was an Egyptian who travelled to St. Maurice via Milan and then moved first to Solothurn (Salodurum), where she lived in the Verenaschlucht canyon. According to the saint’s hagiography, she later moved to Zurzach in ad 323, where she acted as a healer and is still revered as such today. Zurzach with its Verena Minster and St Verena Crypt is a popular place of pilgrimage. The fact that Zurzach is also a well-known spa (Bad Zurzach) is perhaps a reminder of the healing activities of the city’s patron saint.
