Riva San Vitale, Battisterio.
Battistero San Giovanni Battista: the baptistery, which dates back to the 5th century, is the oldest building associated with Christianity in Switzerland that has survived to the present day.

Riva San Vitale’s jewel

The oldest building associated with Christianity in Switzerland that has survived fully preserved to the present day is situated in the Ticino village of Riva San Vitale on the shores of Lake Lugano: the Battistero, a baptistery with Roman murals that was built about ad 500 and dedicated to John the Baptist. It provides evidence that Christianity characterised by churches had already started to develop very early in southwest Switzerland.
